• Hi All

May I introduce myself. I've just registered on here and should have done years ago. I have the only Opel Rekord P1 pick up registered in England. It arrived here from South Africa 8 years ago. I'm still on a learning curve .. but having recently retired I can now give it the time it needs to fix it

  • Hi Midgee,

warm welcome here and congratulations for own such a rare car her in Europe. We love pictures, so please send us some. As you will have questions we are open to answer and give you all help you need but keep in mind most people here do not use english language.

Have a nice day and success to refurbish your car.

    Gruß
    Johannes

  • Ah thank you Johannes! 😊 Very kind. It runs quite well when it's used. I've had lots of problems with the brakes, fuel pump, and carburettor. I think it's the fuel we have here. E10 even with additives isn't ideal. I use E5 when I can get it. I'll get to work and dig out out some pics soon. Best regards

  • Hello Midgee,

I do not think it's the fuel itself, normally this old engines runs nearly with every sort of gazoline but the carburator often has some problems after a big amount of use - it gets some air leaks and more weak points. If this car was regurlarly used in South-Africa it has suck a lot of dust.

Inside fuel pump often the packings get hard, there are some refurbish kits to get or some other bought a new pump from eastern Europe.

    Hey Midgee,

welcome to our little cozy Forum and thanks for your introduction. Your car is something very special, it's so rare that I have seen it live just once on a Forum meeting.

A few years ago I've been to the UK with my P1 (Lowestoft at the east coast close to Great Yarmouth), maybe one day you'll travel the other way round and visit a classic Opel Meeting in Germany - you'll never know... ;)

I hope that you'll get your pick up back on the road as soon as possible and that you'll enjoy cruising!

    Best wishes!

I bought a new pump from Opel Classic parts. After a year I noticed an oil leak around it? Could be just the seals? I sent my carb to a fellow in Germany to be cleaned and restored. It's been ok until now. Then again it could be something else like the filters. I have to keep pulling the choke to keep the engine running when I stop, otherwise the motor cuts out. Now i cant even get fuel to the carb 😵‍💫 A local brake expert over here made a mess of my brake wheel cylinders, so now I'm attempting to do them myself. New complete wheel cylinders are so expensive. All I need is pistons but I can't find any. I'll have to sand the existing ones with 800 grit paper. I found an Argentinian guy on ebay for rubber seals and dust caps.

What is the easiest, safest way of getting the ring seal on to the piston without damaging it? I'm tempted to dip it in hot water to soften it as I'm scared of over stretching or even snapping it. I tried Matz for pistons but they didn't have any when I called them some time ago. I think I might need a new prop shaft as the existing one is noisy and is obviously well worn.

    Thanks Frankie 👍😃

I would have loved to see your P1 at Lowestoft. I took my pick up to Brooklands .. classic show for German car day 2 years ago. I got lots of likes with offers to sell ?!? It proved very popular. Right hand drive and a genuine SA built original. I've only ever seen one other right hand drive car .. a little black sedan from Malta.

  • What inner diameter your brake cylinder have? Did you get good some good piston seals? Very often these parts causing problems, besause they will not fit and did not seal after a short time of use. Especially you don't use the car regularly.

I sent some brake cylinders to an british company to remake/resleeve them. They did a wonderful job, but the sealing was scrap.

I replaced them by sealings made by FTE, which fit propperly and last longer.

Actually, your pick-up isn't the only one here in the forum. There's another P1 pick-up, but it's not yet drivable. And there's a brilliantly restored P2 pick-up in Switzerland.

    Hi Rudi

    Thanks for your greeting. 👐

The inner diameter is 27mm. That's a good question about seals. Did you use Past Parts over here? They did a crap job on refurbishing my cylinders and I have no idea if they made the seals or imported them. The rear wheel cylinders look good inside but the front I'm not sure. The pistons look like pumice stone 😄 I've ordered seals and dust caps from Argentina so I'll see how they work out

    👍 Any pictures of them?
