Knob under the exhaust manifold

Intake manifold pre-heat. There should be two bi-metal springs that rotate the lever open or close depending on exhaust manifold temperatur. If they are missing the flap inside the manifld simply swings back and forth and causes nothing but annoyance. Best, Marcus

      Thanks a lot Marcus

Ok, if the spring had broken, please could you suggest me the best position for this knob? In other word the normal operating position to avoid a vapour lock ?
Must be turned towards the engine or rotated downward toward the outside?
      Many Thanks.
